Fighting Words

Fighting Words

I’m forever fighting words,

Hunting them down, teasing, squeezing and wringing them.

I want them to squeal;

To provide colour, to communicate the ideas and feelings

I have locked in my head.

They fight me back. They let me down. They refuse to acquiesce.

I am forever fighting words.

I want words that rouse!

There is a war being fought, in minds, in life and distant lands.

I seek words to reveal:

To illustrate, to explain the horror, the injustice

And inflame the hearts.

But they fall short, fail to hit their mark, and merely mock.

I am forever fighting words.

The pen is not mightier than the atomic bomb, the F16 or Chieftain Tank.

The pen is not mightier than racism

If it were we would no longer have war or intolerance; we’d have a just and fair society in which every person is valued.

It feels as if we are engaged in an endless war for social justice and are always falling short. The greedy and selfish pervert the words into propaganda that holds sway over the gullible. Ignorance rules.

I send my words into battle but they are poorly armoured.

I fight the words, looking for a winning combination that resonates with open hearts.

I fight words and I seek to arouse spirits. I use words to fight for a better future.

These are my fighting words.
