Starting about 2012 the far right attempted to have a ‘March for England’ through Brighton every year, rightly seeing us as one of the most progressive cities in the country. It was always a miserable failure with thousands turning out to oppose a gaggle of idiots.
Today the lawyers’ office in Queens Road near the station is one of the targets for the latest attacks. Here’s the poem I wrote back then, dedicated to all those who will be defending it, and all those doing the same at similar places across the country. Especially all the Albion fans, and football fans everywhere, who will show the world that rioting racists don’t represent us and the game we love.
I wish I was standing with you as we punks stood together in Blackpool last Saturday. But I’m gigging in peaceful Edinburgh, in peaceful Scotland, where the word ‘ nationalism’ has a completely different meaning…
See where statements like ‘Leftie activist lawyers’ lead us, Priti Patel? See what happens when you amplify them, Sun, Express, Mail? Get in the sea with the fascists you have facilitated!
MARCH FOR ENGLAND
Let’s march for England ‘gainst a common foe –
The greedy, heartless, profiteering, cruel.
Not as a rabble of foul racist thugs
Conned by the cliches of divide and rule.
We’ve food banks now. Kids go hungry to school.
No cause for pride, just deep and heartfelt shame.
And yet for some it’s not the greedy few
But we, radical Brighton, who’re to blame!
Let’s stand together, build a better world.
Defend all those who weep and starve and parch.
When we stand for our rights in union, Jack
Then England will be truly on the march!
