Interludes in Eternity

Interludes in Eternity

A short stint in infinity,

                Hovering over the void.

An interlude in eternity,

                Not always overjoyed.

A sojourn in reality,

                Aware for a brief while.

Sinking back to oblivion;

                Doing it in style.

A steady dose of awareness,

                Usually known as life.

A fragile brief interim,

                Balanced on the edge of a knife.

Measured in seconds;

                A flash in time.

A few steps in the unknown;

                A message without rhyme.

I’m at that age when my friends are dying or developing serious illnesses. My own body and mind are slowly decaying. We realise we’re facing that void.

I scan the newspapers as my contemporaries and heroes bow out.

Death is ever-present.

Our lives are measured in seconds. We strut the stage and do what we do in the face of a meaningless eternity that will erase the whole of our pointless existence.

So what should we do?

Create and invent religions to provide unknown purpose?

Give up and turn to suicide or addiction?

Or enjoy every second left to us on this roller-coaster ride through the unfathomable depths of eternity, thumbing our nose at the void, exploring, loving, thrilling, delving, enjoying and sharing.

Today we shall live! We shall live with every last spark of our cells – for tomorrow we die (forever!). Today we are alive!! Today is all we have!!

So live, love and wonder!!

Today I am alive!!
