Iceland – black sand beaches with jagged rocks of frozen lava and rough stormy seas. Daring sea rescue and loss of life.

This is the beach where the Grimsby trawler Epine (GY7) that was wrecked on March 13th 1948 with the loss of 14 of her 19 crew. From the shore they could see crew had tied themselves to the mast as huge waves crashed over the boat. One crew member was washed up alive. They managed to get a line out to her and rescued four more.
