After being chilled by Carlos we were woken up by Ian. A welcome return to the festival. He brought his husky, world-weary voice to bear with a series of whiskey-drenched spirituals and blues. We were treated to some Son House, Charlie Patton, Bukka White and various spirituals interspersed with stories and asides. I wasn’t quite sure how the spirituals sat with his lifestyle. He’s lived the blues and it shows. Though, obviously, he’s a reformed character now and on a few occasions offered himself up for children’s parties.
Playing in the afternoon seemed to be a novel experience as he blinked into the strong sunshine. A great set.
