The rich and powerful plundered and robbed for fun, built their massive mansions, castles and palaces as statements of their wealth.
They raised their armies and fought for more land and wealth.
The battlefields were flooded with gore and screams.
When they thought they could make more money from sheep they cleared the people off the land and left them to starve.
Now the battlefields are full of birdsong.
The same landed gentry guard the wealth they robbed long ago. Now they rob through other means – government contracts, investments, tax evasion, off-shore havens, insider knowledge. It’s more of the same by the same.

The level of literacy of the period was very high, part of the Scottish Enlightenment influence.
The awareness and political acumen was also good. I really don’t know what has happened. It’s been downhill in lots of ways.
