I first discovered Little Richard when I was twelve! I fell in love! Met him once!
Little Richard was my favourite Rock ‘n’ Roll singer. The power of his performances blew me away when I stumbled across him as a twelve year old. He had a style that was unique and seminal. He made Elvis look tame.
That pompadour was something else!
However, I was a little unsure what I might find when I began to delve for a few quotes. I thought it might just be a lot of religious tosh. But I was surprised. This is a man who has lived, loved and travelled the world. He has tasted the fruits of success but also the bitter taste of discrimination, failure and fear. Little Richard’s lifestyle of orgies and religion seems to sum up a lot of the dilemma in American society of reconciling all the many aspects of what it is to be human. Suppression creates extremes.
