I was in London for the British sixties Underground. It was a great time. By the seventies it had died. The energy had gone. Then came Punk and the energy and excitement was back. Where’s the next great burst of energy coming from? We desperately need it!
Punk Rock’s Revolutionary DIY Mentality

An excellent article, well researched, championing a love for Punk Rock. I love the energy flowing through it!
Much to the annoyance of my parents, Punk found me a willing recipient just as I started public school: oh the irony! lol 🙂 Bands like the Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, Blitz, The Ramones, Siouixsie and the Banshees and The Dead Kennedy’s were a staple diet that offered an outlet for my childhood angst, anger and resentment not to mention my growing dissatisfaction at being tethered by school. I recall spending long-weekends – aged 13 or 14 in London – hanging out with bondage-clad punks, skin-heads and rockers in London’s Carnaby Street – or disturbing shoppers in my home-town whilst blasting out tracks from London Calling in the middle of M&S on Saturday afternoons! It was a riot of good clean fun that hurt no-one but vented my spleen all the same. Heady days indeed 🙂
Up until just a few years ago, I’d kept my hand-painted leather biker’s jacket – tatty, ripped, lived-in and punk – but far to small to ever wear again, it had to go, yet my memories live on ‘cos punk never dies!
Thanks for the walk down memory lane dude, rock-on!

I can well relate to your tales of teenage angst. I think music was such a great outlet for all that pent-up teenage fury.
I still love it!

When cast from that particular mould I don’t think it possible to ever really remove oneself (fully) from it – our ‘formative years’ are the basis upon which we build upwards, albeit with discernment, clear thinking and changing priorities. Your love of rock music – indeed all music…your taste is diverse – will never die! The passion alight then is alight now, still bright and burning in heart and mind, still fuelling the fire that energises and propels us through life.
Punk had/has the raw edge and grittiness of character to always remain differentiated from mainstream music and boldly declare that difference as a quality of being. Even if I didn’t understand Punk as a way of life – as a mind-set – I loved the explosiveness of the music, the eruption of volcanic energy, its anger, its anti-everything appeal: it roared and that was all I ever really wanted to do! Better the angst was kept out than kept in!
On occasion I’ll spend a while on Youtube piecing playing a hodgepodge of tracks from the past and disappear for a moment or two back to a time long ago and scream and shout my heart out! It’s medicine for the soul 🙂 No doubt you do the same on the quiet?

Dewin – you have painted with words the feelings of then and now.
For me it is the power of the music or its beauty coupled with the power of the poetry within it. I always went for powerful lyrics!
Namaste Opher 🙂
Tis certainly powerfully lyricized: raw, gritty, razor edged sporting a Mohican!
I’d love to see a revival in Punk…it would be timely to do so given the state of the nation, nay, of the world!

Dewin – I agree – a revival is overdue! We need a full-blooded rebellion!
You are so right Opher! The people need a voracious voice through which to be heard on both sides of the great puddle!
I always appreciate the passionate venom in your writing: the energy is infectious!
Enjoy your day. Namaste 🙂

I feel it coming Dewin! People have had enough of this gross inequality, unfairness and populism. They are prepared to stand up for their rights. All we need is the leader of charisma and gravitas! He/she will come!
It cannot happen soon enough Opher! Just how long do the ignorant, the arrogant, the twisted, withered, grossly contemptuous self-serving minority elite believe they can hold dominion over the vast majority without incurring their righteous wrath?
A revolution of Love, long overdue is much needed, not a war, but it is bound to be a crazy-paving path that leads to evolution of our species.
And so it is, the People wait for (the) Source to awaken hearts and minds, but already the Jidaigeki are stirring: new hope will come; a new age of man will begin!

All you need is love!

This is an extremely well put together fast explanation of a “true punk” mentality!
Yes – I thought so too.
