I’m really not sure if the intention was for this to read like a rather twee and old fashioned radio play like they used to have decades ago on BBC Radio 3. It’s excruciatingly “home-counties English” what with all the “bloody this and bloody that” chat and constant references to cups of tea! It’s like sci-fi circa 1935. The only things missing were references to moustache wax and snuff. Very quaint and I’m sure that my grandmother would have been captivated with it.
There was an element of that in the humour. That was the paradox of the aliens.
Thank you mymonkey. You views have provided me with some objectivity. I’ve gone back and had a think. It is very hard to break through the subjectivity of something one has spent a long time working on. Someone else’s opinion enables greater insight. So thank you.
I will try not to be defensive but I am content that the alien sections are more Douglas Adams/Monty Python satire than 1930s radio. I deliberately went for a softer, English approach, rather than a more pithy vernacular as I wanted to develop that satire and it was part of the send-up.
I think if you had read more the different strands might have come together and the humour come over a bit more. There is a social/political edge to the writing that is central to the book. There are very different styles deployed
It is a departure for me in that I have not used humour like this in other books. So it is interesting to see how it comes across. Other readers have enjoyed the comic aspects of these scenes but I will go back to them with your perspective.
No. Well that’s fine. I made a deliberate decision to make the aliens in that character. Very different to my other writing. The readers that have read the book think it works, but that’s an individual thing I guess. Nobody else of the dozen who have feed back to me have commented negatively about it. They found it amusing. I found it amusing when I wrote it. Maybe you have to read a bit more to get the whole picture or maybe it doesn’t work for everybody.
Thanks again for the comments. It helps me to get different views. It enables me to read it more objectively.
