Girls – Don’t Keep a Diary!
The sixties were the emergence from the conservatism and prudery of the fifties with all its hypocrisy. The main problem was that the older generation had not emerged. For them the licentiousness and craziness of the sixties was a horror.
I started going out with Liz when we were both at school. At first Liz’s parents liked me. They thought I was witty and intelligent. Things were going well. Liz and I were going well too.
As time went on my hair was getting decidedly longer and my clothes more outrageous and I think a few alarm bells started ringing. It was brought to a head when Malcolm Muggeridge produced a report on television accusing all students of being long-haired, drug taking sex fiends.
It seemed to fit.
They read Liz’s diary. They were shocked.
The result was a visit to my house and a ban.
I could tell I had fallen out of favour.
This did create a bit of a dilemma. But it was easily solved. My good friend Danny had been banned from going out with Carol. But Carol’s parents liked me. So Danny took out Liz and I took out Carol and we swapped! It was the cause of great mirth among us. The deceit added spice.
