Dear Mr President.

Dear Mr President (we’re counting the days),
I’m not sure how you can face Thanksgiving with 262,000 American deaths on your hands – all due to your ineptitude. But I bet, you being a sociopath, that won’t bother you too much.
Thank heaven we are finally getting away from the hate and division you have been sowing.
We won’t miss the fake news, conspiracy theories or undermining of science either.
I’m sure you will continue to fire out your lying tweets to your base to try to incite them some more. They sure lap it up. You must be very proud.
What will the KKK, neo-Nazis and white supremacists do without you? Probably much the same – strut around with their assault rifles, frightened to death of Muslims and immigrants, blacks and Hispanics.
Finally, we’ll be able to start putting right some of the damage you’ve done to the environment. We can get back into the Paris accord and start sorting out global warming. Then we can do something about sustainable energy and biodiversity. The day you leave office will be a great day for the planet.
We can also start backing the UN properly, getting back into the WHO and talking to our allies in a friendly manner.
I hope your tax evasion and dodgy deals catch up with you quickly and you spend the rest of your days locked up where you belong.
You’ve been the biggest conman and snake-oil salesman on the planet.
But now you’re a loser!!
Good riddance to you!!

Mississippi – The Blues Trail

We headed off down Highway 61. We were tracing the old Blues Trail, hunting out the markers, graves and monuments to the incredible Blues singers of yesteryear.

Tracking them down took us off the beaten track to fields, obscure towns and old plantations that we would never otherwise have encountered.

The Clarkesdale Mississippi Blues Museum was a pleasant stop! The murals by the railway track at Tutwiler.

I want to go back!!

Poetry – I’m so tough

I’m so tough

I’m so tough.

I’m so strong.

Always right

Never wrong.

I beat Covid.

I build walls.

I speak tough.

I’ve got balls.

I don’t use masks.

I don’t space.

Mess with me.

I’m in your face.

I am rude.

I’m uncouth.

Had it easy

Since my youth.

I don’t do tax.

Don’t do rules.

Treat people.

Like they’re fools.

I do tweets.

I brag a lot.

Taunt and bully.

I’m so hot.

Opher – 7.10.2020

It is so interesting to look at the phenomenon of Trump – an over-privileged man who is worshipped by the poor.

Never have we had anyone so unsuited to high office. He lacks all the diplomatic skills. He doesn’t believe experts or science. He has aligned himself to an extreme right-wing and sets out to deliver for them.

He seems to lack all empathy and is cynical.

When confronted he attacks. When unloved he is petulant.

He likes to appear tough. He has a swagger.

He perpetuates myths and conspiracy. He lies and puts out fake news. He has undermined the entire fabric of society and works the seam of that division for his own advantage.

The myth of his acumen as a business-man is based on lies. He has been failing continuously, bailed out by his father. He has avoided paying tax through many illegal loopholes. He has very dubious business relationships with Russia. He owes billions.

What a strange phenomenon.

Donald Trump – A major threat to the environment?

Donald Trump may turn out to be a major threat to the world’s environment, putting hundreds of thousands of species under threat, promoting major climate change and putting many communities at risk of such things as flooding, drought, extreme weather, hurricanes, crop failures and starvation. This could result in mass migrations of people and mass extinctions of plants and animals.

President elect Trump claims that manmade climate change is a hoax. He is threatening to pull out of the Paris agreement and reverse the Green Energy programmes. He says that he will promote economic growth by returning to fossil fuel programmes (coal, oil and gas), reopen plants and to hell with the carbon dioxide output or pollution.

He is solely concerned with the economy and jobs. The environment is not an issue.

This runs contrary to all the evidence accumulated on climate change. In the long term it will not only be an environmental and human disaster but also turn into a major crisis for the economy. I cannot help thinking that this is extremely bad news for the whole world.

In a worrying new development his administration has asked for the names of all the people involved in the Green Energy programmes and who have promoted Green Energy and been involved with climate change talks. The fear is of a witch-hunt.

Anyone who is involved with the environment should be anxious. If he goes through with his stated policy change, the USA, instead of leading in the clean up of carbon dioxide, will be greatly increasing its carbon output. This could be a disaster for the world and impact on the whole initiative to prevent global warming and protect the dwindling rainforests and animals.

If there is a continued increase in global temperature, created by human activity through the burning of fossil fuels (as most scientists now believe), it would have a devastating effect on wildlife and human populations. There would be radical changes in weather patterns leading to droughts, heatwaves, floods, desertification, hurricanes and extreme weather, melting of ice-caps, a rise in sea levels, changes in animal and plant distribution, death of corals and sea-life, changes in conditions for crops and have a colossal impact on wildlife and human populations.

For nature, already under extreme attack, this could be catastrophic.

This also does not bode well for other environmental initiatives. It would appear that the environment and wildlife do not feature in the world of Trump. All that matters is money.

Hopefully the experts will convince Mr Trump that he is wrong and the risks are far too great.

Hopefully he will not go through with his withdrawal from environmental agreements and a return to dirty energy.

The world is at stake.

Why not read up my views on the devastation of our natural world in my book Anthropocene Apocalypse. It tells the story of what is happening to the planet through our burgeoning numbers and destructive practices.

The possible break up of Europe? What would the USA be like if it had split up?

As we surge towards a conclusion to this unnecessary referendum on Brexit or Bremain I cannot help ponder some of the other unknowables.

I have grown up in a world with two superpowers – America and Russia – who took us to the brink of annihilation. I lived for decades with a series of nuclear warheads pointing at me – still do. America dominates the world economic stage and pulls all the shots. It controls the markets.

America is made up of fifty States all of which are really autonomous countries. They are vastly different in culture, geography, size, population, climate, racial mix, resources and wealth.

If they had operated as separate countries would any of them have been a major world player?

If those 50 States all secede from the Union what would happen to America’s power?

Has America turned into a backdoor theocracy?

As a Brit who is looking in from outside I am seeing a huge influence of Christianity on the election process and legislation. A theocracy is when religion runs the government (eg. Iran or Saudi Arabia).

Is American run by religion?

Is it possible for a non-Christian to be even nominated into high office?

How much power does the Christian lobby have over the laws that are passed?

At what point do you say that religion calls the shots?

We seem to have very flaky groups, such as the creationists, running schools or setting the curriculum. How involved are they?

Or is my perspective giving me a false picture?
