I am an antitheist.
Not only do I believe that there is no god, and that belief in any such supernatural entity is engrained primitive superstition (cultural indoctrination), but I think the overall effect of religion on human culture has been stultifying, violent and destructive.
I know there are positive things that have come out of religion. I appreciate the beauty of much of the world’s great religious architecture from the Henges, Pyramids, Temples and Mosques to the Cathedrals. I appreciate the art, poetry and stories. I even accept the way many people need a clear moral structure and pathway for life that is provided for by religions and there is a psychological boost for believers.
That does not justify religion. It is nowhere near enough.
If it is not true it is not true.
You have to weight it against the pogroms, crusades, persecutions, holy wars, desecrations, stultifying of culture, genocides, stoning, intolerance, victimisation, burning, torture, loss of personal freedom, as well as the colossal amount of time and energy spent on what I would view as a pointless task.
If a fraction of the time and effort was put into productive tasks such as alleviating world poverty, solving our horrendous population growth and protecting our increasing ravaged ecosystems we would have solved these major problems.
As we walked round Bali last year, taking care not to fall down one of the holes in the street, looking at the poverty, population density and lack of infrastructure it appeared that the only major commerce was the construction of religious sculptures, statues and offerings. It was very quaint but not very productive.
I would prefer to follow a well thought through morality as laid out in the United Nations charter of Human Rights rather than the dubious and contradictory morality handed down from religious scripts that are thousands of years out of date. I do not agree with ‘an eye for an eye’, in the modern day these are open to interpretation and are out of date.
Religion does not have the only word on morality. I am an extremely moral atheist.
I see no evidence what so ever for the work of any god. The idea that a god created the universe is absurd to me. Where did he/she come from? Where did he/she exist? What was there before? The thinking is far too human.
I could, and have, written a book about the absurdities, contradictions and disastrous effect of religion.
