Harold Godwin marched up from London to do battle with Harold Hardrada the Viking. It was a big hard-fought battle. Harold Godwin won. He then marched his weary soldiers all the way down to Hastings to do battle with the Normans.
The French beat us.
Without having to fight the Vikings in York the Normans would have been defeated and all British history would have been different.
