Fish Wars – Chris Riddell

The main idea of the EU was to bring all the belligerent powers in Europe together and interlock them in trade so that we did not keep having these horrendous wars.

Some twats think that we are too superior to be in a team of equals. They’d rather have enemies and wars.

No. That may (or may not) have been the main idea of the EEC (European Economic Community) when it was first founded. But the EU is something completely different. The EU is a political union, not an economic one. And any political union has to be controlled from the centre by elites. I find it not surprising that, after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the elites created the EU in 1993.

    1. It was the original aim and that is still extremely valid.
Yes the community has turned into a more political union of partnerships that extend beyond trade. I applaud that. The elite are the ones controlling our current government. They are hand and glove with them. The Tories were set up by the elite to serve the elite and that’s what they do. They represent them. Give me the EU any day.

      1. Opher, do you really think that the EU – or UN – is any less controlled by the elites than the Tories are? (Or Labour, for that matter?)

      2. That is debatable. The elites control everything through bribery and threats. Larger bodies, particularly made up of disparate composites, will certainly be harder to manage.
We desperately need a more global perspective to tackle war, poverty, inequality, tax fraud and environmental degradation. I’ll put my money on the UN and EU. I think they’ve done a lot of good.
One thing I’m totally sure of is that you can’t get much worse than the Tories.
