Poetry – John Phillips – Poppies

Another poem from John Phillip’s poetry book Shorts and Shots.

Poppies

Flower of remembrance;

Emblem of unending war and endless broken lives.

Echoes of hatred, of ambition,

Powering the pumps and pipelines

Deep beneath the land.

This war for Hearts and Minds

A quest for power and profit,

Fueling the Drone and roadside bomb;

The Semtex-sacrifice and landmines for the children

Sprinkling the fields with Poppy red.

But if the word was Revolution

Who could deny a people risen in unity?

Or quiet the angry voices raised as one?

Always the flowering of ambition,

Mirroring the Poppy with strange, narcotic power.
