Carnival – Jackson C Frank – Pete Smith.

When we were students Pete and I shared a room in a dingy terrace. It was tiny, freezing, damp, dirty, smelly and probably very dangerous – but we loved in. It was just big enough for two beds. Between the two beds we had a paraffin stove which we kept on all night in an attempt to stop us freezing. We blocked up all the draughts through the French windows with newspaper. Somehow we did not suffocate!

Pete had a heap of old harmoniums stacked at the end of the room and used to make mandoukes, among other things.

Pete used to sit on his bed and play Jackson C Frank numbers. I can picture him now.

He lives in Australia now and just sent this through. Took me straight back!!
