A Thousand Cuts – a poem

A Thousand Cuts

Callous, uncaring, selfish,

Greedy and mean,

The nasty party

Are running the scene.

Cutting here,

And cutting there,

Decimating services

Everywhere.

Created by the rich

To look after their loot,

Clobbering the poor

And putting in the boot.

The nasty Tory Party

Is simply running amok;

Getting away with murder

With the country in hock.

Callous, uncaring, selfish,

Greedy and mean,

The nasty party

Are running the scene.

Opher – 27.2.2019

While the country is totally obsessed with Brexit the Tories are continuing their war against the poor.

They have continued slashing social welfare, slashing spending on schools, hospitals, social services, councils, police and the armed forces.

They think nobody is watching and they can get away with it.

They have had to pay for their tax cuts for the rich. They have had to make up the shortfall because of their mismanagement of the economy. Who pays? Not the bankers whose bonuses meet new highs, not the executives whose pay is soaring, no – the ordinary people.

They have had their pensions robbed, their pay frozen and their work increased. The public services have been devastated.

Crime has gone through the roof.

Teachers are leaving in droves.

There is a crisis in the NHS.

There are pot-holes in the road.

Libraries and youth services are shutting.

People are being thrown on to the streets.

Food banks and rough sleeping are increasing

.

How callous can you get?

      1. Yeah, the Blue Wave should wash away some of the stink, but there’s a corruption and a hateful streak that has deep roots. We will fight that too.

  1. So well written, succinct and to the point. The Tory party have plunged the poor and low income into despair and total poverty. I’m a single person atm. After repayments of debt, I have approx £121 a month to pay bill’s, feed myself and live! Facing eviction again….

    1. Laura I am so sorry to hear that. I think it is terrible the way the Tories have scapegoated the poor while pandering to the rich! I can’t wait for something better!

      1. Me neither. I made a tough decision this month. Pay some bills and debts and buy some food OR pay rent. I always pay rent, so paid bills.

I’m renting privately. My landlord isn’t sympathetic (well it’s a business, I can understand that). He is threatening to serve notice. No ifs or buts, no rent, no flat.

This week I also received a letter telling me that my deductions are not being made at a high enough rate to cover my ‘debts’. Therefore I need to call their Debt Management Dept as a matter of urgency. Failure to do so may result in deductions being made at 80%?!”?!

        80% EIGHTY PERCENT!!

They are already at 40%, leaving me, on a good month, with £121. 80% will leave me with £60.50 to live on PER MONTH!!

ISo I’ll no only be homeless, I’ll also starve to death.

This welfare reform isn’t working, people are struggling, suffering. If you are a parent and in poverty. It is now being classed as ‘neglect’ and Social Services can remove your children on the grounds that you ‘may have caused emotional abuse or neglect’ which they can’t prove but will somehow make a convincing argument based on lies. Or they will use their ‘crystal ball method’ to see in the further and discover that your children are at significant risk of future harm’!

        We need change, soon.

      2. Laura – that is so distressing. I can really feel the pain and anguish you are going through. It is so grossly unfair. What the Tories have done is appalling. I am so sorry.
Thank you for sharing and I really hope that things improve soon and you’re not kicked out on to the streets.
Hopefully there will be an election soon and things might change for the better.
