The Abomination of Whaling!!

Some facts about whales:

In fact the sperm whale has the largest brain of all living animals.

Spindle cells found in several species of whale and dolphin also indicate the possibility of high intelligence

Dolphins and porpoises use vocal sounds and body language to communicate with one another. Baleen whales communicate over hundreds of miles using complex songs.

They have complex social structures. The social structure of killer whale  for example (killer whales are actually dolphins) is often compared to that of elephants and humans, and is even considered by some to resemble a culture.

So why the hell are we hunting and cruelly killing these intelligent, sensitive creatures???

  1. Namaste Opher 🙂

It beggars belief that whaling continues as a commercial enterprise: that in this age of advanced technology we cannot find means to replace in full either the products or the industries dependant on the corpses of whales to provide or sustain them. Regardless of the rhetoric – originating from countries such as Iceland, Norway and Japan – I do not accept that whaling is wholly sustainable nor that abstaining from whaling will impinge on fish stocks or income for small communities: indeed, the scientific community largely supports this fact – and opportunity for jobs and thus income can be provided elsewhere: that however is dependant on the choices made by government.

Greenpeace do sterling work globally, but yet, far more could be done if we valued the worth of our one Earth and donated a minute proportion of our disposal incomes to protecting her.

Great post Opher, an excellent reminder that whaling is an abomination that has no place in the modern world.

    Namaste 🙂

    1. Dewin – I am disgusted and enraged that people could even contemplate doing this to such gentle creatures. It is cruel, barbaric and appalling.
      Humans disgust me.

      1. Agreed Opher! Humankind is still in its evolutionary infancy still suckling its Earth Mother whilst shaking its rattle and demanding gratification. It awaits its call to consciousness – to be led, progressed, evolved. Individuals have that power within themselves to change, transform and become something far better and by extension demand something far better, with vision, from governments stuck in a time-warp turning God’s Earth on an axis of fool’s gold. The cycle must change, humankind must grow.

I don’t fish but have been fishing just once. I recall removing the hook from a fish that I swear to this day screamed with pain. It wasn’t loud but it distressed immensely. I cannot imagine the pain delivered by a harpoon: just the mere thought of it brings tears to my eyes.

        Namaste 🙂

Have been told to get my bugle out and get back to blogging. Will do soon but always admire Opher’s posts, his persistence, and passion for protecting this wonderful world of biodiversity. Last year a whale beached near us in Portugal. The response of the majority of people was a desire to help and save it. In 2018 we have become more aware of the effects of plastic pollution, whales and other creatures found dead with plastic filling their stomachs and now the disgrace of Japan’s decision to continue with commercial whaling. Please support all those organisations that persist in confronting this terrible destruction of our close relatives of the ocean.
