All Answers Are Contained Within – A Poem

All Answers Are Contained Within

Mosques, Cathedrals, Temples and Idols,

Rituals, Prayers, Sacrifices and Adornment.

Holy Books, Psalms, Offerings and Pageant.

Indoctrination, Incantation, Lessons and Ceremony.

All falling well short of the mystery;

Not coming close to capturing the essence;

Not explaining the unexplainable;

Not shedding any light on reality;

But arrogantly asserting that all answers

Are contained within.

Every religion claims to have the answer. Seemingly it is only contained within their holy books and rituals. All other religions have got it wrong.

My God is better than your God.

Yet the mysteries go on untouched by the words in the holy books.

There are no answers to be found – but lots of questions.

  1. Except, when you smell a newborn baby’s head. Or ski the last run as on a quiet trail, as the sun sets, and only the crows are with you. Kissing the lips of your lover, softly. Thick oat, dark beer with comrades, watching football. A solo walk on the beach, feet in the sand, as the sun rises- poor local spearing octopus for dinner. Little Mexican grandma cooking tortillas, smiling at her grandkids.

    All of this, and that deep, dark well at the endless bottom of my heart which bubbles forth grace and often brings me to tears with thanksgiving.

    All theology is such: be kind. I want to write a book, 1,000 pages to be exact, leather bound, and on each and every page, it will say: be kind. It is the final testament to answering the question, laying this mystery bare.

    Peace.

  2. Well said, Opher. I hope that one day people worldwide will shed the scourge of organized religion and just embrace their own spirituality.
