A much maligned person was Karl. Vilified and painted as a communist ogre. What was he really? Someone who explored a fairer way of operating the world? Someone who offered a different vision to that of capitalism? Perhaps that is why capitalism conspired against him, his ideas and any attempt to put them into practice? Can Marxism work?

I first learnt about communism in school and unfortunately I later found out that what we learnt about wasn’t true communism or it’s real values. I was never a huge fan of democracy and I still tend to lean towards communism. Although most people hear the word communism and see it as this horrible thing I feel like if more people actually understood what it was about they may actually support it. The only problem I think with communism is that it sounds good in theory but is very difficult to actually execute.
It seems to me that most ‘communist’ states end up as totalitarian states. The people are then controlled by monolithic structures.
I’m not sure what the answer is. It seems to me that we have a mentality that is governed by small number tribalism. Somehow we have to surmount that primitive thinking and develop a fair, global society that is compassionate, nurturing and not subject to corruption and power-wielding. Bit of a tall order.
Yes exactly! That’s the problem with communist states- they start out as communists and end up as dictatorships which is so sad. It’s just human nature to want power and control and I don’t think it’s very likely to have a world filled with compassionate and nurturing countries all co-existing.
I still idealistically put my faith in the UN and its charter of Human Rights. Makes sense to me. Most things need solving globally!
