Brussels – All you need is love

IMG_1068

It seems an age ago that we back in the sixties and there was hope.

The world was not a place of butchery and hatred where young people were willing to blow themselves to pieces.

Love was the message.

Young people trekked out across the planet exporting their smiles. Friendship and sharing were the mantra, equality and freedom was the ethos.

The only blot on the landscape was the war in Vietnam.

That world seems so innocent now. But it was love that made it possible. If you meet someone as an equal with a smile and respect you make contact.

Somehow the radicalised young Muslims have been talked into hatred. They feel ostracised from society and have grown to despise it. Gone are the days that all the world wore flares. We are fractured.

It is time to heal.

You do not cure hatred with more hate.

The Beatles have been rather neglected and denigrated of late. They were the greatest band ever because of their genius and adventurousness. They were at the forefront of the sixties culture and they had a knack of summing things up.

All You Need Is Love

Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love

There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done
Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game
It’s easy

Nothing you can make that can’t be made
No one you can save that can’t be saved
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time
It’s easy

All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need

Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love

All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need

Nothing you can know that isn’t known
Nothing you can see that isn’t shown
Nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be
It’s easy

All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need

All you need is love (All together, now!)
All you need is love (Everybody!)
All you need is love, love
Love is all you need
Love is all you need (Love is all you need)
Love is all you need (Love is all you need)
Love is all you need (Love is all you need)
Love is all you need (Love is all you need)
Love is all you need (Love is all you need)
Love is all you need (Love is all you need)
Love is all you need (Love is all you need)
Love is all you need (Love is all you need)
Love is all you need (Love is all you need)
Love is all you need (Love is all you need)
Love is all you need (Love is all you need)
Yee-hai! (Love is all you need)
Love is all you need (Love is all you need)

  1. The Beatles were not the answer to everything and certainly not the greatest Band that is somewhat exaggerated. I think if you were to ask those that were in Vietnam they would not regard what they went through as “a blot on the landscape”. What’s the reason now for what we have, a growing resentment for those that have it all I don’t know neither do you or the Politicians, they don’t know how to deal with it. Now in this Country we are called racists for saying all those that go out to fight for ISIS and come back here should have their Passports taken away, why is that racist, this is the “do gooders” brigade trying to understand the terrorist be nice to them etc etc, crap. I know what I would want to happen to these filthy pigs who were prepared to blow up as many as they could in Belgium. Do you really believe all of this could be sorted with understanding them and love, love, love – like hell. Yes hatred breeds more hatred, are we to standby and let these pigs destroy us, destroying them is the only answer.

    1. I think it’s more complex than that Anna. It’s not about being nice to terrorists.
ISIS scum need hunting down and wiping out. But that ideology has come out of the inequality, racism and hopelessness that exists in places like Molenbeek in Belgium. There are tens of thousands of people who feel alienated and full of hatred because they feel excluded and not valued. They see the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as war against Muslims. They are fodder for people who are looking to radicalise them.
The people who are suffering most from ISIS are other Muslims. The vast majority of deaths are other Muslims.
What is required is a multipronged set of actions:
      a. Military action to wipe out the scum who are behaving like savage barbarians
      b. Education to teach that Islam does not mean fundamentalism, intolerance, hatred and strict adherence to a doctrine based on a world one thousand years ago. That Muslims can be tolerant and live in a multicultural society
      c. Funding blocks: To cut off the funding from places like Iran and Saudi Arabia who are funding the whole radicalisation and war in the Middle East
      d. Embargoes to prevent weapons being sold to ISIS and them to gain funding from selling oil etc.
      e. Intelligence – to track down the people planning out atrocities and bring them to justice.
      f. Equality – to counter the racism and poverty that creates third class citizens that gives rise to radicalism
      g. Ending the war in Syria that is creating such traumatisation and hatred.
      h. Sorting out a long-term Palestinian/Israeli solution. This underpins a lot of the resentment and hatred that creates the terrorism.
      I. Bring peace and stability to Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and Nigeria.
      j. Bring Pakistan on side.
Just wading in with all out war (which cannot be won) without bringing the Arab League into it merely stirs up more hatred and opposition. It smacks of crusades and oil. That what Bush and Blair did. They could not win in Afghanistan or Iraq and merely created ISIS and what we now have.
Demonising Muslims, who are more the victims than we are, would be counterproductive. That’s what the terrorists want. They know they’d get a new army of recruits.
I’m not soft on terrorists. I’m an idealist. I want to get to that brotherhood of love I experienced in the sixties.
The Vietnam war was a terrible thing but it seemed to be the only major problem (in terms of war) back then. We now seem to have war all over the world. I was not trivialising it.
The Beatles were amazing. They did not have the answers but they probably were the best band ever, certainly right up there.
I certainly don’t think it’s racist to call ISIS scum or go out to fight them. They need opposing with force.

  2. Love is the answer. Not emotional, sentimental love, although that’s nice. The Power of Love. Stronger than anything.

    1. You’re right Mary. If we love people, bring them in, value them, treat them as equals, listen to them, provide a place for them, they will respond with love.

  3. First of all a comic has been called racist and reported to the authorities who will waste public money in bringing a case against him, for just saying that those that go out should not be allowed back in. The beatles were not loved by everyone in fact they were detested by many, they made fools of many and only cared about one thing themselves and money. We have to come too far with greed and hatred you will never get back to that Brotherhood of love you experienced in the sixties. You were lucky you had the freedom the independence. You mention Saudi Arabia, this Country entertains them the Queen is friends with them, MONEY MONEY, what goes on there we do nothing about. Too late now but Syria should have been left alone to sort their own problems out we in the West should keep our bloody noses out of what goes on what went on, look at the Countries the west so called freed, what state are they in now. Israel will never stop what they are doing to the Palestinian People, I have campaigned for the Palestinians nothing changes, Israel has far too much hatred. I am sorry to say but the only thing to do is bomb the bastards to hell at what costs, deaths of others. Educate them what educate them against the hate they feel for the west, like the English and the Irish do you honestly believe that there is no hatred out there, well there is. Protestant hate for Catholics still persists, as there is amongst some in the South hatred for what the British did. The Scottish hate us, ask yourself why. Hatred is such a strong element you cannot change that. You cannot change these people these people who are so convinced they are right, all we can do is destroy them with weapons that’s what they understand not namby pamby rubbish. Once and for all this situation has to be sorted, those Politicians who lined their pockets I mention BLAIR supposed Labour. who did so much damage and walk away with blood forever dripping from their hands. Europe has to get together all of us and whatever it takes these pigs have to be destroyed and all those that believe in them. That includes all those who came here were brought up here who refused to accept our way of life and form ghettos and now support ISIS. If we don’t all of this butchering of us will be passed onto to the children of the future. Whatever problems these people have in their own Countries let them sort it out themselves, Close our Borders, in fact Europe should close all Borders. Merkel is to blame for so much of the border problems. Deport all those here in this Country who believe we are in the wrong and the terrorists are right, they don’t like this Country then fuck off out of it. This may be against all you believe but I think you will find the majority of people in this Country have had enough. You want to go back to the time of Peace and Love, so much of that was drug inflicted. I want to go back to a time when this Country was a Country to admire respect, respect for authority that has all gone. The rules were all destroyed and we need to bring back respect authority too many far too many believe in the soft touch well it does not wok Opher look at us here look at the World.

    1. If peace and love was caused by drugs then give me drugs, give everyone drugs.
Britain can never be a force in the world. We do not have an Empire anymore. We are a small country who produces very little.
Many of those rules were spiteful and mean. They kept the masses down and created misery. We should have respect for everyone and a fair, civilised, orderly society.
Pragmatically how would you sort who supported terrorism? Do you think they would tell you? How would you sort them? Where would you send them?
I think we should deport or lock up the purveyors of hatred, but under the law, not the mob.
I’ve railed against the hijab and many Muslim practices. I think they should be banned. We do not want primitive Sharia law and such. But most Muslims are reasonable, pleasant individuals. Just like all the Irish weren’t terrorist bombers.
I’ve travelled all round the world, including Ireland and Scotland, and I’ve invariable found pleasant, helpful people, not hatred.
The root cause of all the problem is inequality, starvation, poverty and war. That is what needs sorting.
War is disgusting. It is the very last resort. ISIS is one of the few cases where I would support it.
Things are not anywhere near as bad as you see it.

      1. You know, just because there is so much hatred in the world doesn’t mean we should give up rallying for peace. When we get to the point we can no longer express our demands, we might just as well blow it all to bits. To think otherwise is to be a defeatist, imo.

  4. Do you honestly think I agreed with an Empire the troubles in the majority of the Countries were caused by the bloody Empire, there should be no Royalty, Do you believe there is no Class System in this Country because you are very much mistaken. So you would be quite prepared to jail these people and we keep paying for them right. I do not want a War, I certainly do not want to see my Sons fighting for this Country or any other Country. No one with any sense wants a War but what you advocate is bloody stupid Peace and Love and who the hell do you think is going to listen to that. Perhaps we shouLd go out and hand out all the drugs and say “Peace Man”. There comes a time when action has to be taken, so when the bombs go off here as long as it won’t be your area we must still try to understand and educate the terrorist. World War II and the bomb dropped on Japan, I do not agree with what they did, I was not born. My husband was all for what they did, he said had they not he would not have got back from Burma, but I believe the Japs could have been beaten on the ground. I did not agree with the orders the RAF were given to bomb Dresden that was horrendous, David was all for it, I still say it was wrong. The soft touch with these terrorists has not worked we are running out of options. Or perhaps we should just wait and see, perhaps we can watch more Paris, more Belgium, London, New York etc etc.

    1. But Anna. You are not reading what I say.
I know there is a class system. I experience it a lot. I know how it operates. As a Head I was invited to dinners with generals, judges and politicians, I was asked to join the Masons, I turned them all down.
Hopefully lots of people will listen to peace and love. The people in the square in Belgium and in Paris weren’t baying for blood. They were singing Imagine, lighting candles and talking love.
I put forward nine ways forward – all thought through – one was to continue the military war against ISIS. That is not advocating peace!
      I’m a pragmatic idealist!
I demonstrated against the war in Vietnam. It was wrong. But I support the war against ISIS. They are scum. It is how it is done. I do not want indiscriminate blanket bombing. I want the Arabs to do it.
      ISIS is being defeated.
Things are not doom and gloom in that respect.

    1. Well then you see that I am not being simplistic. I advocate war against ISIS along with a lot of other measure.
We cannot win by war alone.

      1. They were singing ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon – a song of peace and idealism.
In the face of horrendous violence they sang of peace.

  5. I think we are duped into believing there is hatred all around. I don’t believe that for a moment. THAT’S what comes of buying into everything the media puts out there. On the contrary, there is not a silent MINORITY in this world, there is a silent MAJORITY. Is that not the case in every example of tyranny? A small group of people turn masses into sheeple? What is needed is that we learn to speak up. The only way to get a better world is to demand it. But we’ve got to stop believing the lie that our voices would be ineffective first.

If the Beatles did one thing, it was that they gave us hope, as did most the music of the 60’s. (We won’t talk about Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction!” 😉 )

    1. That’s my experience too. Where-ever I’ve been around the world I’ve found friendly people. There are always that tiny minority who colour everything.
That majority of sheeple need to speak up – to shout – and make our voices heard.
I believe that we all add into the zeitgeist of the moment. That’s what made the sixties so special; it was a time of optimism. We thought we were building a new world of peace and harmony. Everywhere we went was smiles and comradeship – all over the world.
We can make a positive time for now and use that energy to solve all the problems.
We can’t let the terrorist scum win by filling us with fear and hatred.
      Thanks Cheryl.
